Summary: Aamin Srivastava intends to buy his sister a birthday present: unfortunately, it seems as though he won't get to give it to her.

Laughing, you promise Liam you'd meet him at home later - he has late classes and yours were all canceled for some reason, but you're not complaining- and wave to him as he goes. It's not like you have that much to do today besides homework- oh, wait, you have errands to run, Noel's birthday is in a week and you haven't bought her present yet and that clinches it. Besides, it's warm and the sun is bright, and you always enjoyed the sunshine.

Of course, you realize later, walking from shop to shop, you have no idea what to buy her. It was easier when you were both younger, dolls and frilly clothes for dolls, and you have no idea what to buy a twelve-year old girl, she put her dolls away and the last time you bought her a betting ticket you were in trouble with your parents for weeks, so that's out, too.

Finally, after what feels like forever and is probably only half an hour, you leave a bookstore with a book about card games and a deck of cards. That could almost be enough, but it doesn't feel quite right, somehow, you can almost hear your mother lecturing you on how she's going to be twelve, buy her something that suits her age, and you don't really want that lecture, not when you still have to tell her things and deal with her reaction.

But that's for another day, and you're not going to worry about it, not yet anyway, and you hum to yourself as you walk along, watch the flower petals swirl around your feet though the wind is still. You think that maybe you want to show her this, that maybe she'd appreciate it.

And then you see it in the window, a silver chain with a red jewel that would hang over the forehead, and you have to buy it for her, because she'd look like a princess wearing it. You aren't quite paying attention when you leave the shop, afterwards, because you have the chain in your fingers and you're thinking about giving it to her now, even though it's not her birthday yet, because it would make her smile.

And then there's a pain in your arm and you blink, not comprehending, all your thoughts feel so slow, at the tranquilizer dart sticking out of your shoulder. The last thing you are aware of as everything goes black are the flower petals shredding around you off the trees, and the chain lying broken on the ground, jewel shattered, and then nothing.
